Nelnet's origins date back to the formation of UNIPAC Service Corporation in 1978 to service loans for Union Bank and Trust Company of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Packers National Bank of Omaha, Nebraska. UNIPAC grew its third-party student loan servicing business to approximately $9.7 billion in loans in 2000 when it was merged with Nelnet, an education finance company formed in 1996.
Following the merger with UNIPAC, Nelnet responded to market needs for coordination of the lending, funding and servicing components of education finance and created a vertically integrated platform that could effectively service each sector of the student loan industry. Through a series of strategic acquisitions, Nelnet also added geographic diversity and operational expertise.
