Nelnet awards five Academic All-Star Citizenship scholarships

Indianapolis, Ind., April 12, 2006 – Today, Nelnet presented Academic All-Star Citizenship scholarships to five deserving Indiana students for $1,000 each. As a leading education services company and this year's presenting sponsor, Nelnet is honored to join The Indianapolis Star in recognizing outstanding students and granting scholarships. Every Indiana high school is invited to nominate one student for the Academic All-Star program; principals, counselors, and teachers worked together to nominate 249 students. Of those, 88 students were chosen as Academic All-Star nominees. A luncheon was held at the Indiana Roof Ballroom for the selected nominees, 38 of whom were presented as this year's Academic All-Stars.

The Academic All-Star Citizenship award is a special designation for nominees who show exemplary leadership and community involvement. Nelnet presented the following students with an Academic All-Star Citizenship scholarship at today's luncheon:

  • Ryan Patrick Callahan, Pike High School, Indianapolis, IN

  • Alyssa Burkhardt, Hamilton Heights High School, Cicero, IN

  • Patrick J. Eckerle, Marion High School, Marion, IN

  • Alys Maguire Moore, Greencastle High School, Greencastle, IN

  • Ethan Hatch, John Adams High School, South Bend, IN

"These five students were recognized with the citizenship award because they display outstanding community involvement and leadership, a quality that is very important to Nelnet; we constantly strive to be an excellent community partner," said Cheryl Watson, Nelnet's Chief Communications Officer.
